Fermenting fights food waste

Fermenting fights food waste

“When I grow up I want to be, one of the harvesters of the trees. I think before my days are done, I want to be a cider man.” Any Primus fans?? Well anyway, 4.4 million apples are thrown away every day in the UK according to Love Food Hate Waste, and that’s not accounting for those left of trees! This year Sadeh volunteers helped Lone Goat rescue enough apples and pears to make 65 litres of cider and perry, all this fruit would have otherwise rotted on the ground. In the UK in general we thow out 4.5 million tonnes of edible food every year. That is a whole lot of food which should not be rubbish. Fermenting, brewing, pickling and preserving means we can turn those soon to be mouldy carrots into a delicious and nutritious snack. It means the farmer who sowed them, grew them, nurtured them, packaged them and sent them on their way will not have wasted his time and all that carbon heavy energy. Fight food waste and eat ferments!
